It’s November, which means there is plenty of football to watch. In addition to the NFL and college football, powderpuff is returning for another year at Shaler Area High School on November 21st at 7 PM down on Biles Field.
The annual game sees the junior and senior classes rally a team of girls together for an all-girls flag football game. It’s not just about football though. The game is a charity game, with all proceeds raised being donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to further breast cancer research. A $5 donation will be taken at the gate, raising additional money.
As the days go on and tensions rise, both junior coach Mr. Ben Yeckel and senior coach Mr. Bill Mitchell are feeling confident.
“The majority of the team returned from last year, so they have experience on their side. There is always extra pressure on the Seniors because it is their last chance for a win. If the Seniors have an all-in, unselfish mindset, they will no doubt come out with the win this year,” Mr. Mitchell said.
The seniors seem to have an advantage over the juniors, having some experienced players that competed last year. It feels like Mr. Mitchell is not the only one with confidence in the seniors.
“This year I’m feeling confident that we will win. There’s a lot more seniors who are participating this year which is super hype. Last year as juniors we scored the first touchdown and almost won. This year I feel pretty confident to say we are going to win,” senior Maggie Mills said.
This year’s electric matchup is gaining buzz from both sides.
“Mr. Mitchell and I have split the past two seasons. So, this is the rubber match between us as coaches. I had a very strong class of players the past two years so hopefully this lives up to the expectations. Juniors by 6!” Mr. Yeckel said.
Although Mr. Yeckel is optimistic about his team, the game almost did not happen. It was not until the last day of signups that the junior class had enough players to field a team and make the event happen. The whole night is for a good cause, so it is great that it came to fruition this year.
“It’s gonna be fun. I’m looking forward to trying a new sport and being able to make memories with my friends, and it’s looking like we might get a win,” junior Shayna Gaskill said.
