The Shaler Area National Honors society (NHS), ran a successful Pennies for Patients program for the 64th year running. All proceeds from this fundraiser went to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Pittsburgh. Everyday for a week, NHS students would walk into every classroom and ask students for any spare change they had.
To incentivize more charity, there was a competition between 1st period classes to see who could raise the most money. The winners received a complimentary breakfast courtesy of the NHS. With that being said, many believe there is still some room for improvement.
“I think a lot of people got super competitive about having breakfast as a reward. If they changed the criteria to most money raised per class instead of most money donated per person then I think more people would be motivated to donate,” senior Gabby Madrid said.
At the end of the week, Mr. Williams, Mr. McDermott, and Mr. Tepsich’s class donated the most money in the large class division while Mr. Kepreos, Mrs. Shvach and Mrs. Mohr topped the leaderboard in the small class division.
The result of this friendly competition was a record amount of money raised by Shaler Area for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Pittsburgh.
“We collected $4,117.99. Then an anonymous donation of over $200 was made so that we top our last year’s amount of $4,325.19,” director of NHS, Mrs. Autumn Sprys said.
