Teacher Feature: Mrs. Becky Butler

This week, we spoke with teacher Mrs. Becky Butler. She teaches math, computer science, and is the sponsor for the Shaler Area Colorguard.

Q: If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A: Philly cheesesteak. A good source of protein that’s relatively easy to make.

Q: What is your favorite place you’ve visited or you want to visit?

A: Rome.  And I want to go to Australia.

Q: You have a free night. What are you doing?

A: Play games with family, friends. I play a lot of card games and board games.

Q: Out of all the topics that you teach. What is your favorite? What do you find most interesting?

A: I think my computer science courses that I teach are really interesting. I’m trying to think of one specific topic. Maybe when we do object-oriented programing because it’s really intimidating at first, but at some point something clicks and you can kind of see the reason for doing it.

Abraham Lincoln

Q: If you could meet any person, dead or alive. Who would it be and why?

A: Abraham Lincoln. I had to write a paper in fifth grade, and it was only me that wrote the paper for Abraham Lincoln. I was obsessed with Abraham Lincoln for a good three years of my life. I could recall any fact about the man, so I have to pay homage to my younger self.

Q: If you could have any pet, what would it be?

A: I want a bird that would talk to me. A pretty, pretty one with pretty feathers that will talk to me. So maybe, like a parrot.

Q: What was your first car?

A: A Kia Soul. It was 18th birthday gift from my parents, but I totaled it last year, the day after band camp. It was the most traumatic experience. I felt like a piece of my girlhood was gone. It was sad. I love my new car, though.

Q: If you could be a part of any Shaler Area team, club or activity, which one would it be?

A: The Sustainability club. They do a lot of things and I like how large the club is. We had a science club at my school, but it was very small.

Q: What are your most irresponsible purchases?

A: That’s a question. I’m a sucker for Old Navy. If I have super cash, I have to spend it. That’s irresponsible. I know that.

One Direction

Q: What is the best concert you’ve been to? And what is your dream concert?

A: Oh my gosh. They weren’t around for that long, but I went to four of five One Direction concerts. That’s really something that a lot of people can’t say because they’re gone now. My dream concert? Freddie Mercury.

Q: Who are your favorite celebrities and why?

A: Sabrina Carpenter was my COVID obsession. Everyone found something to do during COVID and she’s just stuck around.

Q: So are you going to the Short ‘n Sweet tour?

A: I am, and I saw Billie Eilish.

Q: If you had any advice for your younger self, what would you say?

A: Ask for help. I had such a big ego in high school, and then college was tough. I literally didn’t know to seek out help. Go to tutoring!
