Todays teacher feature subject is Gregory Foster, the chemistry teacher who couldn’t be more excited about science.
Q: What is your favorite topic to teach in chemistry?
A: Chemical reactions are fun because I get to show you demonstrations and do demonstrations for that. The introduction to quantum mechanics and quantum theory, because I get to show you a few things, and it’s really interesting. You say the most curious students usually like the chapter about this because it’s high level and interesting.
Q: What is your favorite thing to demonstrate for chemical reactions?
A: Sodium and water is a classic because it explains when you get a kick out of the reactions. The thermite reaction is also pretty solid.
Q: What is your favorite concert that you’ve seen?
A:Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I think the last time I’ve seen him in concert twice, the last time he was in Pittsburgh, we did not go because we have small children. Then he died the next year.
Q: What is your favorite basketball team?
A: Cleveland Cavaliers
Q: If you were on death row, what would your last meal be?
A: I always make, like a main course and it’s pretty much always something with meat. And then a lot of times I forget to even consider a side course. So I’ll just stick with that. Just go with steak.
Q: What is a piece of advice that you would give to your younger self?
A: Piece of advice I got was to be where you are. I was young, I think that’s really good advice. And what that means is just like, be mentally present or physically present. So I think that’s important and easy to not do that.
Q: Your favorite genre of music?
A: I used to play either classic rock or the country music that sounds like rock used to. Not really country stuff, like a classic country like Willie Nelson.
Q: Who would you want to be if you couldn’t be yourself?
A: More time and energy. It’s not that I need to be somebody else. There’s not always enough time to do what I want to do.
