The Girls Tennis team has had a very rewarding season. Although their record may not have been impressive, the girls improved throughout the season.
The Titans went from lost seven starters from last year’s team. Grace Grabowski became the number one starter as a sophomore this year. To make matters more difficult, the team had thirteen new players to make their total roster number 25 players.
“It made playing time difficult, but my girls were very receptive, patient, and hard working throughout the year,” Coach Brian Duermeyer said.
Junior Brooke Callahan liked seeing everyone outside of tennis and making bonds with her teammates.
“We all got to hang around and just have fun together,” she said.
The year got off to a rough start with a 5-0 loss to Butler, but the girls try to keep things positive.
“Everyone does their best to hype everyone up even if it’s a big loss,” junior Izzy Gehringer said.
The girls tennis team only won one match, but the girls had fun and improved through each match.
“The girls grew from a group of beginners to a difficult team to play,” Coach Duermeyer said.
The girls kept practicing and working together to defeat Burrell 4-1 in their last match.
While the team may not have achieved many wins, there were some individual accomplishments of note.
Grace Grabowski and team co-captain Alexis Frisbee won a first round match against Butler in section doubles.
Juniors Sadie Waag and Elizabeth Hanasik played as a doubles pairing. They led the team in victories with six. Sophomores Brooke Bankowski and Grace Fisher won twice at number 2 doubles.
”They made a formidable team and will contribute next year,” Duermeyer said.
Junior Chloe Mauer earned starts at singles and doubles and she joined this year.
“At one point, she won back-to-back matches after falling behind and digging herself out of a deep hole. We’re excited about her moving forward,” Duermeyer said.
Junior Alexis Frisbee and junior Izzy Gehringer were noted for their contributions at number two and three singles.
While many would have a tough time being positive in a season without a lot of victories, Coach Duermeyer is not one of those.
“I cannot think of a low for the season. The girls represented the district well. They competed hard, and they improved,” he said. “I’m proud of what they accomplished, even if it cannot be seen in a win/loss record.”

Thank you for covering the girls’ tennis team. I am honored to be the program’s coach and am incredibly proud of the young people I coach.
