This year, the Sustainability Club and National Honor Society are hosting a t-shirt drive to make blankets for the homeless. Once finished, these will be donated to the Light of Life Rescue Mission in Etna. At the head of this project are seniors Madeline Walker, Margarite Boggs, and Christian Mendoza.
They are looking to collect 300 shirts, which are collected across from the activities office, as each blanket takes around 5-10 shirts. Once the shirts are collected, they are then washed and cut into large squares. After that, the squares are sewn together into a grid and backed with a sturdy fabric and fleece. To finish them, strips are cut along the sides and tied together. Thanks to all of this effort, these blankets can last for a long time and provide warmth from many winters in the future.
“The project is mainly about connecting people to create a positive impact. We care about supporting our community and helping the environment, and this project fulfills those goals. What really makes this project special is how inclusive and collaborative it is. We have people from several different organizations working together to strive for a common purpose,” Mendoza said.
The group hopes to make 30 blankets and save one to raffle off in the spring to help raise funds for the Light of Life Rescue Mission. So, make sure to donate any t-shirts you may have lying around to save them from hanging in thrift stores or being dumped in a landfill.
