The San-Diego band, Almost Monday, released their debut album Dive on September 25 and it’s definitely something to stop and listen to! Almost Monday is an indie rock/pop trio whose songs capture the feeling of friendships, good times, and beach/surfing culture. My first reaction to this group is how well lead singer Dawson Daugherty’s voice works well with his band mates, Luke Fabory on bass and Cole Clisby on guitar. They use very soft vocals and catchy rhythms. This album is very beachy and summery, which makes you want to tap your feet to the beat!

This is their most popular song. Check it out by scanning the code into Spotify!

Can’t Slow Down —

Almost Mondays single featuring Can’t Slow Down

Never Enough

This song is a combined idea of appreciating people that you sometimes take for granted and it’s not too late to turn it around and tell them. At the beginning of the song you get a guitar solo which blends into Daugherty’s soothing vocals. The best part of the song is, “Wish I was always recording ‘Cause I like the way you speak. Evidently I enjoy you simply; Sun kissed, red lips. You’re always on my mind.” They speak very slowly and are drawn out but when the chorus hits it speeds up with the beat!

Sunburn

Sunburn has a very cheery beat, but hard hitting lyrics of a break up. The mix of vocals and instruments brings it all together to be enjoyed by many! One set of lyrics I love is, “All of that red over my skin (ouch); Took you to places that you never been (you never been there). Why you gotta say goodbye (don’t say, yeah)?” It changes the pace of the song for a moment to lead back into the chorus and relates to how many feel after a break up. It summarizes how even if a person left because the relationship was just temporary to them then it can lead to a sunburn or ever-lasting effect on them.

Dive

An opening track should set the mood for the entirety of an album. “Dive”, even though it does not quite match up with the vibe of the rest of the tracks, is such a strong opener and overall has an impressive composition. With a length of 1:12 and only 11 lines of lyrics, there’s something that is so hauntingly beautiful about the instrumental, and the brief lyrics are revealed to have a deep meaning. The last two lines state, “Hoping you’ll remember me, hoping it’s not just a dream.” These lyrics set the tone for the dreamy album, and that Almost Monday will be remembered through their catchy music.

She Likes Sports

She Likes Sports is an upbeat indie song with lyrics that show a girl who is competitive and literally likes sports, as shown in the very lively music video. The song caught my attention as I am someone who likes sports, so understanding the sports-concept was fairly easy. The lyrics, “She’s got a tight grip around my heart throwin’ in a towel, take me back to the start.” These lyrics are impactful as it shows the girl throughout the song is playing sports, but is also a heartbreaker and plays with Almost Monday’s heart in a sense. The band wants to go back to the old days where their heart wasn’t being messed with. The back tracks with instruments as well sets an upbeat, happy mood, which ultimately sets a very good mood.

Jupiter

Jupiter is the focus track on the album; it is the most important and significant. It is seemingly a love song. The opening of the song has a fast-paced beat. Going off of that, the instrumental back-track also has an upbeat set mood, similar to She Loves Sports and the rest of the album. Setting the listener in a happy upbeat mood all while dancing along, Almost Monday says in the lyric, “And I’m loving every second with you, Sittin’ high up, we enjoy the view.” As along with, “It’s written on your face, gettin’ lost, forgеttin’ time and space.” These lyrics have a deep sincere meaning as they show the band is in love with a girl and when they are looking at her time stops as they get lost in her eyes. Another meaning of the second lyric of forgetting time and space can be interpreted as just having a good time in general forgetting time as many people say “time flies when you’re having fun.”
