Last year Pearl and the Auburn Tigers went 32-6 with his second final four appearance. Florida ultimately ended Auburn’s spectacular run in March.
That offseason pearls recruited some pretty big names in the portal going after the likes of UCFs Keshawn Hall, and Mississippi States Keshawn Murphy, it looked like the Tigers would be primed to make another greater March Madness run.
That’s why some people were confused that Pearl was planning on retiring a couple months before the season. Considering how big of an offseason Auburn had.
But none of that really mattered because on September 22 Bruce Pearl publicly announced his retirement. From coaching, and that he would take an ambassador role within the athletic department. He announced his retirement via social media in a 14 minute video.
Many former and current players showed their support for pearl and praised him for his successful 11 years as head coach at Auburn.
During NBA media day Former Auburn Tiger and current Houston Rockets player Jabari Smith Jr. was asked how he feels about Bruce Pearl’s retirement.
He stated “ I think Bruce Pearl deserves his retirement, I feel like he’s done enough in this sport of basketball… He’ll be a name that will be remembered forever.”
Zep Jasper, former Auburn guard, made sure to also give his praise to Pearl, writing via social media.
“ What an honor it is to play for one of the best college coaches in college basketball history. I will always appreciate the times my family and I spent at Auburn. I want to thank you for everything. You are a true warrior, fighter, motivator, and leader.”
Before stepping away Pearl made a name for himself at Neville’s Arena(Auburn’s court). Pearl finished his coaching career in Auburn with a 706-268 win loss, while also becoming the winningest coach at Auburn.
Bruce has cemented himself in college basketball history, and is without a doubt one of the best coaches the game has to offer.
Pearl turned a tragic Auburn program into a winning program through his controversial recruiting methods and exceptional coaching. Helping Auburn become a national program and a March Madness contender almost every year. while also helping the SEC become a dominant conference in college basketball, turning Auburn into a fringe blue blood school.
Not only that but Bruce pearl has had the ability to coach some major talents like recent Johni Broome who was named the best college basketball player in the 2024-2025 season.
Along that team was freshman standout Tahaad Pettiford, a shifty guard, who was a key part of the team’s run in March Madness. Tahaad averaged 15.2 points a game in March. Where he had some of his best games of the season against Creighton and Michigan.
But if there’s anything Pearl is known for in the college world it’s his list of controversies and decisions, and this is not the exception.
Tahaad had a tough decision this summer: enter his name into the NBA draft and get to hear his name called in Brooklyn, New York or return for another to Auburn for his sophomore year. In the end Bruce persuaded Tahaad to come back to Auburn for another year.
What Tahaad didn’t know was Pearl had decided that he would stop coaching before the start of the 2025-2026 season. Tahaad has not made a public announcement at the time of this writing. He does have the ability to hit the transfer portal and find a new team till October 22.
Now the big question would be who would take over the job of the head coach for the Tigers? Well, Pearl got that all figured out, he gave the job to his son Steven Pearl. Steven Pearl who has stuck by his dads side for 11 years with Auburn. Steven had multiple opportunities to leave Auburn, but chose to be loyal to his father and the program.
Auburn will still look to have a solid season and it will be interesting to see how the team operates without Bruce Pearl at the helms. It will be an interesting season for the Auburn Tigers and where Tahaad Pettiford will end up going.
