What to watch, read, listen to for Halloween

The Autopsy of Jane Doe

The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a pretty underrated movie, as this film isn’t at all what you’d expect going into it. Detectives find the body of a woman buried under a house, but as the coroners complete the autopsy, more confusing clues unfold. These appear throughout the story that lead to the plot twist at the end. The whole time you’re trying to piece the clues together but you just can’t figure it out. It’s not a very long movie, which I personally dread, and it keeps your attention the whole time. There’s a few jump scares, but the uncertainty of movie is what keeps you on the edge of your seat, making it great to watch on a scary night.

Halloween

As Halloween approaches, one of my favorite things to do is find a cozy blanket, make some popcorn, and watch a scary movie. One of my all-time favorite movies is Halloween, the version that was released in 2018. It’s full of jump scares and tons of suspension as you await the return of Michael Myers. The movie is mainly about a woman who survived an attack from Myers many years ago and now that he has escaped from his institution, she prepares to face him for a second time. I’m very hard to scare when it comes to movies but this one really had me terrified of what would happen next. I wanted to look away from the screen at times but I couldn’t because it was just too good. If you decide not to watch this movie, then you’re missing out on a great scare during this Halloween season.

Saw

If you have never seen “Saw”, what are you doing? “Saw” is one of my favorite scary movies to watch in the fall because it has a great twisted storyline. Throughout the whole movie your eyes are glued to the screen. It is about a jigsaw killer who kills their victims by putting them in these complicated traps and puzzles, so he never ends up killing anyone. It is full of creepy surprises and gore that keep you on the edge of your seat. If you like scary movies you have to check out “Saw”!

Hereditary

This movie is not for the faint of heart, but I would recommend it to anybody who can overlook psychological trauma and occasional gore to enjoy one of the most well-directed and well-acted horror movies of our time. Toni Colette excellently portrays the estranged mother of the Graham family, who face plenty of pressing tensions and paranormal happenings as they continually experience unbearable grief. “Hereditary” is full of moments that manage to draw in audiences no matter how badly they want to look away, and moments that excellently create a feeling of shared vulnerability with the characters. I’m not easily scared by movies, since I have grown a tolerance from watching countless movies of the genre, but this movie left me on edge for days. With demons, ghosts, severed heads, rituals, jumpscares, and a whole lot of fire ants, I couldn’t think of a better movie to watch when you are looking for that Halloween thrill.

The Tell-Tale Heart

“The Tell-Tale Heart” is such a classic, ubiquitous creepy short story, but that’s because it’s really, really good. It follows the inner ramblings of a madman trying to prove that he’s perfectly sane by recounting his crime, and it’s incredibly well written. The fast pace and paranoid language really draw you into the story. Even better than reading it is listening to it- there are a bunch of dramatic readings of it on YouTube that are definitely worth checking out, like this one…

Casper

Although “Casper” might not be the spookiest, scariest halloween movie around, it’s one you have to watch. The storyline revolves around a ghost named Casper, but Casper is not just any ghost, he’s a friendly ghost. He as well as his three evil uncles haunt a massive mansion in the middle of Maine. James, a ghost hunting specialist, decides to bring his daughter, Kat and live in the mansion to try and communicate with the ghosts. The movie shows how Kat and Casper form a friendship like no their before. If you are looking for a fun Halloween movie that won’t scare you too much, “Casper” is a great movie to watch this season!

Hubie Halloween

Looking for a Halloween movie that won’t make you stay up at night? The perfect movie for you is Hubie Halloween. It’s a really funny Halloween movie with a feel-good side to it. It’s about a guy, Hubie Dubois, who is made fun of by the people in his town for his love of Halloween. He’s the person that anyone calls when a mystery needs to be solved. When people begin to disappear in his town, he is called on to solve the case. Through his experiences of a budding romance, receiving a lot of hate, while also solving a mystery, Hubie learns a very valuable lesson about not caring what other people think. If you want a funny Halloween movie to watch, check out Hubie Halloween!

Halloweentown

Halloweentown is the perfect combination of spooky adventures and a warm-hearted plot line to make the ideal October 31st movie night. It is a family movie with one center plot: Halloween. A lot of movies for this season focus on scares, which could be watched any time of the year. Halloweentown incompasis the holiday and is sure to get you in the spirit. So, on October 31st, gather around the TV with your family, grab the newly acquired candy, and turn on Halloweentown!

Mr. Schott

Misery by Stephen King

Just read it. Sure, you could watch the movie, but that’s almost cheating (but the movie version is also very good). A famous author is in a crippling accident on a remote road, but he is saved and then cared for by one of his biggest fans. Unfortunately for him, she is a little bit unstable. “I am in trouble here. This woman is not right.” She gets him addicted to painkillers and holds him captive as she tries to control him and what he writes in his next book which is the next in a series that she loves. When she isn’t pleased with the story lines or his behavior, things don’t go well for the writer and he starts to believe she has no intention of ever letting him go. It’s got everything you want in a twisted psychological thriller including unforgettable scenes with an axe and a lawnmower.

The Strangers: Prey at Night

“The Strangers: Prey at Night” is a rare instance where the sequel is better than the original. The movie has your standard slasher plot, with the twist of instead of one killer, a group of three conspirators, who do this sort of thing fairly often, use a run down trailer park as their hunting grounds. The movie has a fantastic cast, stellar acting, great directing, and scares (both jumpscares and less ‘gotcha’ horror) and gore aplenty, all set to a fantastic, 80s-style soundtrack that also makes use of famous songs and artists such as Cambodia by Kim Wilde and, in one of the most memorable scenes, Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler. As a cherry on top, it actually has a satisfying ending, unlike some other movies of the same genre (looking at you, Mr. Vorhees). It’s a far cry from the tone of the original, but it sets this new tone well and is, arguably, the better movie of the two. And, if a stranger knocks on the door and asks if Tamara is home, you may want to call the police while your phone still works.

Hocus Pocus

I have to say, I am a fan of the cheesy classics. Every year I curl up in my bed with all my lights off except for my fairy lights and a candle lit with some popcorn to watch this memorable movie. Such a childhood, adorably entertaining movie makes for a good night close to Halloween. After moving to Salem, teenager Max Dennison explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani, and their new friend, Allison. After Allison’s superstitious story about the three Sanderson sisters, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches who used to live in the house. With the help of a mysterious black magical cat, the group are on a chase to steal the witches’ book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Halloween Episodes

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of my favorite shows, and the Halloween specials each season are the perfect thing to watch if you’re looking for something more comedic with a good storyline. Each episode is a heist, with the main characters competing for a prize by being  the most strategic detective in order to earn the title “Ultimate Detective Slash Genius”  There is not a single bad episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, so even if you’ve never watched it, this is a perfect place to start. Each Halloween special has its own unique twists and turns, every episode being less predictable than the one from the previous season! In season 6, the series started mid season, yet they were still able to incorporate the heists into different holidays, such as Easter and Cinco de Mayo, while still maintaining the Halloween aspect! With a diverse cast, the light heartedness and comedy, and new plots every episode (while touching on important issues in the real world), Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the perfect sitcom, and the Halloween episodes are a great Halloween watch!
